If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, you know that flight attendants are some of the most helpful and friendly people you’ll meet. They’re there to make sure you have a safe and comfortable flight, and they’re always happy to answer any questions you may have. It has been a few years since I’ve been entrusted with passenger interactions, but I am going through my notes to share the lessons I’ve learned.
As a frequent flyer and aviation enthusiast, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with many flight attendants over the years, as well as did my time as a flight attendant. And while they’re always happy to help, there are a few questions that they get asked over and over again. Here are the top five questions flight attendants are asked, and the answers they give:

- “Can I have a free upgrade?”
This is probably the most common question flight attendants get asked, and unfortunately, the answer is almost always no. Airlines have strict policies regarding upgrades, and flight attendants have no control over who gets one. So while it never hurts to ask, don’t be surprised if the answer is no.
- “Why do I have to turn off my electronic devices during takeoff and landing?”
This is a question that flight attendants get asked all the time, and the answer is simple: electronic devices can interfere with the aircraft’s navigation and communication systems. So to ensure a safe flight, it’s important to turn off your devices during takeoff and landing.
- “What’s the best way to deal with jet lag?”
Jet lag is a common problem for travelers, and flight attendants have plenty of experience dealing with it. Their advice? Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and try to get as much sleep as possible on the flight. And once you’ve arrived at your destination, get plenty of sunlight to help reset your body’s clock.
- “What happens if there’s an emergency?”
Flight attendants are trained to handle a wide range of emergencies, from medical situations to severe turbulence. If there’s an emergency, the flight crew will give instructions over the intercom, and the flight attendants will assist passengers as needed. It’s important to pay attention to the safety briefing at the beginning of the flight, as this will give you important information on what to do in the event of an emergency.
- “What’s the best way to get over a fear of flying?”
Many people have a fear of flying, and flight attendants are often asked for advice on how to overcome it. Their advice? Face your fears head-on. The more you fly, the more comfortable you’ll become with it. Try to distract yourself with a good book or movie, and focus on the fact that millions of people fly every day without incident.
So there you have it – the top five questions flight attendants are asked, and the answers they give. While these questions may be common, flight attendants are always happy to answer them and ensure that you have a safe and comfortable flight. Next time you’re on a plane, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with your flight attendant – you might just learn something new!
